Notice anything different… (hint, look up) It’s about d*mn time (in the words of Lizzo) that we had a blog header change – we’re going for that sleek sophisticated look! It’s also time that we got onto another blog post in the ‘Day In The Life’ series. This time, it’s the turn of the man, the myth and the legend that is Mr Jay Everall. Jay has his fingers in many pies here at Valcato; far more than I can remember, so I’m going to let him take the floor and tell you about what he gets up to… Take it away, Jay…
The Man, The Myth, The Legend. I need that written on my office door! It’s tricky to describe an average ‘Day In The Life’ because my favourite thing about this job is that no two days are ever the same!
I spend roughly 50% of my time doing all of that ‘boring’ business management stuff that I enjoy so much – sales forecasts, marketing plans, accounts, rights & licensing, paying the gas bill for the studio (note to cast: I’m watching that thermostat…you know who you are!) and then the other 50% of the time I spend within the business and getting hands-on with whatever needs doing! Its been 10 years since I’ve performed on stage but I still keep myself busy getting creative with our amazing production team and cast.
I have a secondary role as Project Manager for our AV and Events team so I oversee any studio and Outside Broadcast or streaming work and, when I get the time, I love a good chinwag with directors and managers of other entertainment production companies where we can compare notes, share ideas and generally put the world to rights!
While I’m always on some sort of deadline or schedule for client work, another perk of the job is that within reason I can choose my own hours and occasionally work from home during the week. As a daddy to a 2 year old daughter this really is invaluable for me – I’m literally the biggest pushover and if I’m off to work but she wants to play a little longer, I can nudge my hours around and spend another half an hour playing princesses and belting out Let It Go safe in the knowledge that I can make the time up during naptime and still get everything done for the day. Since day one I’ve always said that Valcato is one big family, and now having a family of my own (during a pandemic no less..) its really reminded me how important that is. Me and my dream team are here because we love what we do, and we like to sprinkle a bit of that love into every production we create.
Well… someone’s a busy bee. Now I feel for most this will have be interesting and informative; but for me, it’s now let me know when the best time to nag the boss is! Sorry, not sorry Jay! I’ll be back with another ‘Day In The Life’ episode in a few weeks so keep your eyes peeled folks.
Ciao for now, Otti x
